I have always loved sitting down to an elegant table. Somehow everything always tastes better when the table looks beautiful! Here are five ideas on how to create a stunning classic looks for less. It starts with fresh flowers.
1. FRESH FLOWERS IN LOW SQUARE VASES
Fresh flowers add vibrancy to any table. In the picture above, I paired just one hydrangea with some brightly colored roses and additional flowers. The additional flowers help fill the vase (I prefer square ones vases like this) while keeping the hydrangea in place. I also like to group the flowers in three vases scattered down a long table and draped with round crystal tea lights. The beauty of the low square vases is that you can actually see over the flowers to view your guests.
2. CRYSTAL
Waterford crystal is beautiful – but, pricey. For a similar look opt for their less expensive line by Marquis. Or, even less expensive, is the Godinger line. With the lights dim and the glow of the candles dancing off the crystal, there will be an elegant sheen no matter the brand. These crystal salt and pepper shakers are a great example. They’re made by Godinger and–at just $14–they’re a fraction of the Waterford version which will set you back $145.
3. GOLD IS IN!
Good news, everyone: GOLD IS BACK! Check out ALL the gold I worked into the place setting here including….
Gold plates: These plates are by Vera Wang Wedgewood. Still, you don’t need to pay $115-$155 per place setting. I’ve found an amazing 40-piece set by BrylaneHome and, the dishes are excellent quality and you get the WHOLE set for $197. Amazon has them in stock. Plus, don’t forget your charger plates! (Mine are gold as well–but, don’t be afraid to mix the silver and gold if you prefer.)
Gold Placemats: Meanwhile, the placemats! Chilewich makes a similar style and they cost between $10-$15 each. But, I found a just-as-durable alternative on Amazon (currently with 50% of Prime membership) and these placemats cost just $16 for SIX of them!
Linen Napkins: I used hand sewn linen napkins with our initials embroidered in, accented by these tiny gold anchors which can also function as olive holders, or cocktail stirrers, in your martini! They’re my favorite accent piece and they’re just $14 for the entire package.
4. DIM THE LIGHTS
Don’t forget to dim the lights. You don’t want to go through all this trouble and feel like you’re eating in a cafeteria. It’s my pet peeve when I sit down to eat and the lights are ruining the ambience.
5. CHAMPAGNE
Pour a good glass of champagne to kick off your night. One of the very best for the money is Roderer Estate. Wine Spectator gave it 95 points (out of 100) and, at less than $22 a bottle, that means it’s half the price of Veuve Clicquot.
