We get it. You haven’t traveled in months and you’re going a little stir crazy. You crave new places, new foods, new cultures, and new opportunities.
Given the shut-in culture of the last year, I’m certain your wanderlust is in HIGH GEAR. Ours certainly is!
But, really where do we go? Our plan is probably to postpone that bucket list trip to Manchu Picchu for another 6 months and stay local.
The good news is: there are plenty of amazing ways to get a change of scenery in a healthy, safe environment even last minute at this time of year.
Focusing on Connecticut, since it’s in-state for us, here are a couple of our favorite country spots worth your consideration.
Winivan Farm in Litchfield Hills, Connecticut
Winivan Farm – This Relais & Chateaux resort is a special place. It’s extraordinarily private and hugely luxurious. From the moment you enter the gates to the expansive farm property, you can feel an “other world” kind of existence. The rooms are truly unique. And by that, we mean truly unique.
They consist of a series of cottages scattered across the many acres of vast farmland and woodlands. They all have different themes; from the beaver lodge to the log cabin…to the music room to the helicopter hanger (complete with a real helicopter inside the dwelling) to a tree house. Yes, an actual tree house.
The Charter Oak Cabin is one of the largest on the property and includes an expansive living room and wet bar area, along with massive bathroom and even a hay tower that is outfitted as a sitting room off the sides. An adult’s and kid’s paradise, this room is walkable to the swimming pool next door — great in the summer.
The one room that books up months in advance is the resort’s epic treehouse. You’re suspended high in the trees with all the luxuries of normal life on the ground, including a king size bed, a sitting room and a deep soaking jacuzzi bath tub. This is a once-in-a-lifetime Swiss Family Robinson kind of awesomeness that you are sure to enjoy.
With rooms like this — and fine dining that is really exquisite plus an amazing spa — a weekend at Winivan Farm is a real experience.

Mayflower Inn and Spa, Washington, CT
The Mayflower is located on 58 rural acres in Washington, Connecticut — less than two hours from New York City, or Mystic, Ct. It’s part of the Auberge Resorts hotel group and known for luxury and extra attentive service.
The hotel has an excellent spa and beautiful indoor pool. Its delicious farm-to-table cuisine makes it one of our favorite spots.
There are numerous place to hike to, lawns to cross country ski on, and nearby wineries to enjoy.
