Collagen: The Protein of Youth?

I am forever searching for the healthiest habits, the best exercise regimen, the leanest diet, and the most beneficial skincare products. I like to look and feel my best because it directly impacts my outlook on life and increases my overall productivity. In my article “The Vitamins That Can Help You Nail Your Diet,” I shared the supplements that give me an additional boost. But, vitamins are just one part of my overall routine. I’ve learned that adding additional collagen in my diet also comes with significant benefits.

What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein in the body responsible for structural support in the connective tissue. This includes skin, muscle, hair, nails, ligaments, cartilage and much more. We begin losing collagen around the age of 20 and progressively throughout our lives.

What are the Benefits of Collagen in your Diet?

Studies show that adding collagen to your diet may improve the look and feel of your skin. It may increase muscle mass, support joints and heart health and may even relieve the onset of osteoporosis. While more research is being conducted to substantiate these claims, it is clear that this protein plays a major role in our health and aging process. Ways To Get Collagen

There are different ways to ensure you are getting enough collagen:

  1. Supplements — do your research on the best capsules. Visit the Vitamin Shoppe or GNC to lean more.

  2. Eat foods rich in collagen — fish, berries, egg whites, tomatoes, and peppers. Try researching “collagen diets” and create a meal plan that best incorporates these collagen-abundant foods.

  3. Use Collagen Peptide Powder– this is a personal favorite of mine and has grown increasingly popular in recent years. Just add a quick scoop to your cup of morning coffee or favorite smoothie and you’re all set! Personally, I love to add this hydrolyzed powder to the blender along with mixed berries, Greek yogurt, and almond milk for a healthy breakfast.

Figure out which method of intake works best for you, sit back, and enjoy the benefits!
