Where Bacteria Hides In Your Home (It Will Surprise You!)

If you asked a group of people where bacteria hides most in their home, the majority would probably state the obvious- toilets, cell phones, and remote controls. Surprisingly, that is not the case because we regularly sanitize these items and get rid of germs. But there are other places in our homes where significant amounts of bacteria love to hide. Here is a list of the top 5 areas that require regular attention…

BATHROOM TOWELS

According to Healthline, used towels are one of the worst breeding grounds for bacteria. Many of us hang our damp towels on the back of the bathroom door. This creates the opportunity for germs to accumulate and potentially spread. The general rule is to wash your towels after two uses with hot water.

LIGHT SWITCHES AND DOOR KNOBS

How often do you clean your light switches and door knobs? Studies have shown that these are places where bacteria will breed and cause potential infection. Once a week, clean them using an anti-bacterial wipe.

SPONGES

A 2017 study published in Scientific Reports reveals its surprising findings on sponges. Due to their porosity, sponges can have up to 362 kinds of bacteria hiding in its crevices. Some people think that microwaving or placing them in the dishwasher will kill the germs but this is not the case. It is recommended that you replace them as often as weekly.

GARBAGE DISPOSAL

Think about what you might put down your garbage disposal… raw food. This creates the perfect opportunity for bacteria to build, spread into your sink area, and contaminate your dishes and foods you are preparing. There are many cleaners formulated specifically for disposals to rid them of germs and odor. This should be done every 2-3 weeks.

DOG BEDS

When choosing a dog bed, make sure it is one that can easily be washed. Your pet plays outside, comes into contact with many types of germs, and easily transfers them to the bed. According to research, dog beds should be washed once a week in hot water.
