Outside Dining in a Heated “Bubble”

As the cold winter months settle in across most of the United States, outdoor dining is becoming less available…or, is it?

The restaurant “bubble” is a clear, plastic igloo–and it’s gaining popularity throughout the country. The bubble gives you the opportunity to dine “outdoors” with your family and friends while staying toasty warm, in some cases through electric fireplaces.

From breweries to fine-dining restaurants, many proprietors in the food and beverage industry are looking at these creative options to continue serving customers throughout the winter.

Chris and I got to experience a bubble first-hand when we visited the Coast Guard House, in Narragansett, Rhode Island, with close friends on New Year’s Day. Walking into this plastic igloo was quite an experience. It was beautifully decorated with two couches, a fireplace, and even a chandelier! We were able to (safely) enjoy each other’s company while looking at the gorgeous Rhode Island Coastline.

The food? Incredible. We ordered calamari, octopus, and the abundant crab cake for appetizers. All were excellent. For entrées, we had a variety of seafood and meat, including the duck which was perfectly cooked and paired with sausage and kale. The service was exceptional and our waiter, complete with double masks and gloves, did not hesitate to accommodate all of our requests.

I highly recommend finding a local dining establishment where you can you enjoy this unique experience! We may be in the middle of a pandemic, but there are still ways to get out and have fun.
